The Michael Uren Biomedical Engineering Research Hub houses life-changing research into new and affordable medical technology. Built on the site of Imperial College London’s research campus in White City, west London, the hub is a striking building, designed by Allies & Morrison Architects, which embodies the innovation the world-class institution is renowned for.

For this project, Ambar Kelly supplied its sophisticated RiserSafe® units to streamline the construction process and prevent the risk of falls from height through the riser shaft, keeping the subcontracting teams safe whilst work was underway.

RiserSafe® is a bespoke, prefabricated solution which provides 11 functions across a construction site, saving money, time and risk. Able to drive projects to a faster, cost-effective completion, RiserSafe® eliminates risk of falling from height through floor openings by sealing the opening in one action, and negates the need for other costs such as temporary hand rails.

As well as mitigating the risk of falls from height, RiserSafe® also enables horizontal fire protection, preventing the spread of smoke and flame in the event of fire during
construction. RiserSafe® has been tested for 90 minutes at the British Research Establishment (BRE) with a temperature of 1000oC underneath without failure to its integrity. When used in conjunction with fire stopping compounds, RiserSafe® has been tested and shown to provide a 120-minute fire-rating for integrity and insulation.

Working with a variety of frames, RiserSafe® is tailored to meet the required performance of its intended use. The system incorporates up to 16 separate interfaces between the riser zone and as such the other disciplines can drive a project to an earlier completion date.

On this build, which attained a BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating, the implementation of Ambar Kelly’s RiserSafe units has ensured the Michael Uren Biomedical Engineering Research Hub performs well into its bright future, keeping its occupants on track to delivering pioneering research into biomedicine and medical technology.
